Malaysia Taboos

1.Don't shake hands casually

Malaysia has a special handshake etiquette. When shaking hands, you should use your right hand, and when you take it back, put your right hand in front of your forehead to show your sincerity.
Attention! When shaking hands with the opposite sex, you must obtain the consent of the other party.

2.In Malaysia, the left hand is considered unclean

It is considered rude to receive and pass things with the left hand. In addition, Malaysians are accustomed to eating directly with their right hands. You can follow the local customs or use spoons and other tableware.

3.Don't give gifts casually

When giving gifts, make sure the gifts are consistent with their religious beliefs. If you are giving gifts to Malays, make sure the gifts have a "halal" logo.

4.Don't wear too revealing clothes

Don't wear too revealing clothes in public, don't wear shorts, short skirts, etc., tops should preferably have collars, and shoes should cover the toes.

5.Do not belittle other people's religions or insult the royal family

In Malaysia, religious issues are very sensitive, and controversial topics or behaviors should be avoided; insulting the royal family is illegal in Malaysia, so don't be rude or talk about political issues casually.

6.Do not use your index finger to point at people or indicate the way

In Malaysia, do not point at people or directions with your index finger. This is considered impolite and disrespectful to others, similar to our middle finger pointing at people.

7.You cannot wear shoes to enter the host's house at will

In Malaysia, many families do not wear shoes at home, so when entering the host's house as a guest, you need to ask whether you need to take off your shoes.

8.You cannot "touch the head" or "touch the back" of others

The head is the most sacred part in the eyes of Malaysians, so they are very taboo about being touched on the head. Even for children, do not use the "touching the head to kill"; being touched on the back is also considered to bring bad luck in the eyes of Malays.

9.Do not eat taboo food in front of believers of various religions

Don't eat pork in front of Muslims, and don't eat beef in front of Hindus. Learn more about other people's taboos to avoid conflicts with them.

10.You cannot enter the mosque in any casual way

When the mosque is open to the public, women must wear a robe and a headscarf to enter.

11.You cannot visit others in the evening

Evening is the time for Muslims to pray. Going to someone else's home at this time is not welcome. If you visit at night, it is best to visit after 20:30.

12.You can't refuse the host's hospitality and food

When you are a guest at the host's house, don't refuse the food handed over. If you don't eat or drink, the host will feel disrespected

13.Don't call Malaysians Malays

Because Malays are just a race in Malaysia, they are not a general term, and can be called Malaysians.

14.Tips

In Malaysia, many hotels and restaurants have already included a 10% or 6% service charge on the bill, so there is no need to tip; for hotel waiters and baggage porters, you can tip appropriately; for restaurant gate staff and taxi drivers, you do not need to tip.
